Ozone Treatment For Offensive Odors

Annually we receive hundreds of calls concerning odor lingering in a home, automobile, RV, or business.  We receive calls from daycare centers and nursing homes asking us to treat a “sick room” or entire daycare due to the flu or other viruses that are transmittable.

Sometimes these calls are from realtors trying to list a home and watch it sit due to tobacco odors.  Other calls are from homeowners complaining of a “musty odor” they can’t get rid of.  We also receive calls from hotels to eliminate an odor from a room that guests have violated their no smoking policy.

Tru-Clean Surface Care uses a process known as OST – Ozone Shock Treatment to deal with these issues.

The Ozone Shock Treatment is a process where ozone gas is used to eliminate offensive odors that can not be “scrubbed away.”

Ozone has three oxygen atoms in each released molecule; rather than the two oxygen atoms in the air we breathe.  Ozone works because the atoms are unstable, so its extra oxygen atom detaches when the ozone is released and attaches itself to many other kinds of molecules. If the molecules are stinky, they are changed to “non-stinky.”

Ozone occurs in nature, most often due to lightning strikes during thunderstorms. That “fresh, clean, spring rain” smell that we notice after a storm most often results from nature’s creation of ozone.

The ozone generators used at Tru-Clean Surface Care create ozone in the home or business that eliminates offensive odors and ensures the same clean air as found in nature.  Because of the oxidizing power of ozone, the offensive smells are removed and do not return.  Ozone doesn’t mask the smell like air fresheners; it destroys the odor at the molecular level.

Questions

Can I skip the ozone treatment and paint the walls in my home or business to eliminate odor?

No!

Ozone eliminates the odor-causing molecules, whereas painting temporarily removes the odor. If you don’t use ozone, you still have the smell underneath the paint that will leach through, and you’ll still have the odor issue.  With the proper preparation and follow-up steps, ozone will cure the odor issue ninety-nine percent of the time.

How should I treat a room or home with a cigarette or other odor?

Depending on the odor, what caused it, and how long it dwelled in a room, our ozone shock treatment with a follow-up release of an enzymatic fogging may be all that’s needed.  You should seal the walls and ceilings in homes and businesses with heavy tobacco or other odor. We recommend using oil-based paint because it is a one-step solution. Using water-based paint tends to be a short fix and won’t work in the long run.

Painting alone will Not eliminate odor.  Why?

Covering up a tobacco smell with a fresh coat of paint creates two problems of its own:

Once an odor, especially tobacco, has been painted over, ozone treatment will not be effective since ozone can only treat odors on the surface or odor molecules the gas can “touch.”  Ozone cannot penetrate paint layers

The painting will only temporarily remove the smell. Over time, even within weeks and months, the odor will once again start to leach through the paint.
