Granite Countertop Sealing - What You Need To Know

If your kitchen, outdoor bar, or bathrooms cabinets have a granite countertop, you are in good company.  Over 7.8 million granite countertops cover the counters across the US.  Why is that?

A 100% granite slab is beautiful and one of the most durable surfaces available for kitchen and bathroom countertops.  Granite is resistant to acid.  You don’t have to worry about spilling a glass of white wine.  It is resistant to heat.  It is repairable.  If you damage the surface, natural stone like granite can be restored, and most mishaps can be repaired.

BUT granite is not stain-proof.  Neither is any other type of stone. The good news is you can prevent staining by having the right impregnating sealer applied.  A sealer that penetrates the surface (often called impregnating) is needed for natural stone to offer maximum protection.  Impregnating sealers are not a topical product like you would use on wood for a barrier that rides on the surface, Impregnating sealers applied by Tru-Clean Surface Care are absorbed by the stone thereby affording unparalleled protection, AND, with proper care, is guaranteed to last for over 20 years years.

Unfortunately, all sealers are not made equal.  Many homeowners who have had their granite, travertine, or marble surfaces “sealed” after spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on having them cleaned and polished, have seen the sealer fail after 2-3 years.  The reason for this is one of three things.  The applied sealer was of cheap quality, was not applied properly, or was not taken care of.

Most sealers – especially those sold in big box stores or applied by unscrupulous countertop cleaning companies, don’t have enough repellant properties to prevent oil stains.  In a kitchen, this is critical.  Cooking oil, bacon, butter, cheese, etc., all have oil and can leave unsightly stains.

Tru-Clean Surface Care specializes in the cleaning, polishing, honing, and sealing of natural stone surfaces such as granite, marble, travertine, and limestone surfaces.  When sealing natural stone, we use a Nano sealing, impregnating sealer designed explicitly for granite to repel water and oil.  When used in conjunction with professional cleaning products designed to maintain the sealant properties –your countertop will stay protected for over 20 years.
