What Is That Haze On My Tile Floor?

Grout Haze On Newly Installed Tile Floor

Monthly Tru-Clean receives calls from homeowners complaining that their freshly installed tile flooring has a “haze” on it that can not be removed even with the most aggressive mopping. In many cases, these are brand new homes and in other instances, the homeowner had a tile floor installed and a couple days after installation a white haze appeared.

This white haze is called “efflorescence.”

Efflorescence (which means “to flower out” in French) is the dissolved salts and other minerals deposited on the surface of tile that becomes visible after the evaporation of water that was used when the grout mortar was mixed by the installer. Basically, when a tile is laid to create flooring, grout (mortar) is mixed by the installer and used to fill the gaps in the tile to hold the textile in place. When the installer fills in the grout lines, he wipes the excess grout with a sponge and the salts and minerals of the grout are now smeared across the tile where it dried and turns into efflorescence. Once deposited, efflorescence appears as a haze across the surface of your flooring and becomes impossible to remove without professional help.

Since 2007, Tru-Clean has been the “cleaner of choice” to many of our areas leading contractors, floor covering specialists, interior designers, builders, and homeowners when it comes to the removal of grout haze and efflorescence.

Our specialty process begins with a thorough inspection of the tile flooring to determine the extent of efflorescence damage. We then custom blend a solution of surfactants and emulsifiers charged with hydrogen peroxide and a light acid chain binder. This solution is applied to the tile flooring where each grout line is worked by hand. After sufficient dwell time, a specialty tool is connected to our truckmount and the tile is safely rinsed using over 800 lbs of agitation at 245 degrees. The end result is fresh-clean tile and grout with no hazing.

Tru-Clean is a SurpHaces PRO Partner, a Certified Partner with the prestigious Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and the International Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI).
