Protect Yourself From Carpet Cleaner’s “Gimmicks” in Fort Myers

When we thought we heard it all here comes a new twist in unscrupulous carpet cleaners finding creative ways to jack up prices once they enter your home.

Yesterday we were asked to provide a new client with a quote to clean the carpeting in their home. This particular client had 5 rooms of carpeting and 15 steps. Their carpets were cleaned a year ago and they had no pets and no unusual carpet stains. After examining their carpeting we provided them with a quote to which the client said “Thank God” and scheduled the cleaning for the following week.

After we presented our quote in writing the client asked me to have a seat and presented me with a quote she was provided by a “major franchise” carpet cleaning company. This company’s quote was $180.00 higher than ours and didn’t include a carpet protector. As I examined their quote I was shocked to discover a line item marked “Top Soil” with an additional $186.00 added to the bottom line.

As I spoke with the customer she indicated the “major franchise” told her the additional charge was because her carpets contained “topsoil” and needed their “deep scrub” treatment. I don’t know about you folks but we have never cleaned a customer’s carpeting that didn’t contain “topsoil.” She indicated the carpet cleaner came across as a salesperson and she felt a little intimidated. The only reason she called them was because of name recognition and a carpet cleaning coupon she found in one of those weekly coupon books.

Always read the fine print when dealing with a carpet cleaning coupon.  Some will offer a “steam cleaning” for a too-good-to-be-true-price and when they get to your home they’ll ask if you want them to use a carpet cleaning detergent too.  If you don’t, they’ll deliver on their coupon and just “steam clean” your carpet.  Other times, they will limit room sizes to 200 sq. ft. each.  If your room goes over 200 sq. ft. as many living rooms do, they’ll burn you up with additional square footage prices.  A lot of these same companies do not carry liability insurance or workers’ compensation.  If one of their employees gets hurt at your home, guess who the employee is going to sue?  Not the employer who has no insurance, but the homeowner who does.
