ABC News Investigates Unscrupulous Carpet Cleaners

We’ve all seen the ads “$49-$99” for an entire house of carpet cleaning.  How is this possible?

The short answer is, it’s not possible to deliver a quality cleaning for this “too good to be true pricing.”

Some companies offer this type of pricing to get the phone to ring because they know there are “bargain hunters” out there who will only hire the cheapest guy in town, regardless of the service.

Once the company schedules service with an unsuspecting homeowner, they arrive at the home and quickly start adding additional fees such as a “deep scrub method, or “carpet cleaning detergent” to go along with the steam cleaning they offered in the ad.

They also offer ads such as “4 Rooms of Carpet Cleaning for $59” and then define a room at the unrealistic size such as 100-150 square foot, and this alone can easily double the advertised price because most homes have over this square footage per room.

Another thing we are starting to see is companies offering “carpet cleaning” that dries within 15 minutes.

What these companies are not telling you is that they are simply misting a detergent on the surface of the carpeting and then using a buffer to buff the surface of the carpet essentially.  The surface of your carpeting will be clean; however, the deep-set contaminates, and spots will go untouched and rise to the surface within days.

This is NOT a service recommended by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) or the international Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) for deep cleaning.  This type of cleaning is for routine, maintenance cleaning only.

Tru-Clean Surface Care uses truck mounted cleaning systems that deep clean your carpets, flushing the dirt and contaminants from the fibers with self-neutralizing cleaning solutions that are non-toxic, bio-degradable, and safe for pets and small children while leaving your carpets clean and fresh. We offer only the best carpet cleaning methods that are approved by the IICRC and CRI and use only GOLD certified cleaning solutions.

When inviting a carpet, tile or upholstery cleaning company into your home, know what cleaning processes they use, the steps they’ll take to ensure your carpet, tile or upholstery is as clean as possible, and if the IICRC and CRI certify them.  Also, make sure they carry General Liability and Workers Compensation insurance for your protection.

You should also thoroughly vet the company with the Better Business Bureau or Angie’s List as these are the only services that verify consumer reviews.  We’ve seen companies with glowing reviews from online search engines and other review sites only to check them against the Better Business Bureau and Angie’s List and find a disconnect between what’s verified and what’s not.

Tru-Clean Surface Care is a Certified Partner with the prestigious Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and the International Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI).  Also, we are A+ Rated with the Better Business Bureau and a six-year-in-a-row-winner of the coveted Angie’s List Super Service Award.
