How To Remove Paint From Carpeting In SW Florida

You’re painting a wall in your home when suddenly you notice you’ve spilled paint on your carpeting.

Whenever you’ve accidentally dribbled paint on your carpet you must act right away to avoid the pigments of the paint from permanently staining your carpeting.

Water Based Paint

Water based paints can be removed by using soapy water (Dawn liquid detergent is best) by following the steps below.

  • Scrape up as much of the water based paint as you can by using a spoon or dull knife.
  • Prepare a dishwashing solution by mixing 1 teaspoon of mild detergent to one cup of warm water.
  • Blot the area with this solution using either a sponge or cloth.
  • Repeat the procedure until no further trace of paint can be seen.
  • Rinse area with cool water then blot to dry.

Oil Based Paints

Oil based paints are more difficult to remove since oil based paints cannot be removed by just applying water and detergent. The best solvent to use on oil based paint is dry cleaning solvent (contact your local hardware store for a recommendation). Steps are given below.

  • Scrape up as much of the paint as you can by using a spoon or dull knife.
  • Apply a little bit of cleaning solvent/paint remover to the affected area.
  • Use a dampened towel or cloth to DAB the area, never scrub.
  • Use the same detergent solution as described above to blot the area until paint releases.
  • Rinse the carpeting with cool water and blot dry.

Additional Tips

Always BLOT the area and never scrub as this could force the pigments deep into the carpet fibers and padding.

If the paint is already dry do not attempt any of the above recommendations or rely on self-help or internet remedies.  It’s best to contact a professional such as Tru-Clean who has the experience, certification, and tools necessary to attempt a complete removal of the paint.

ONCE PAINT HAS DRIED NEVER ATTEMPT SPOT REMOVAL ON YOUR OWN.  YOUR ATTEMPTS CAN MAKE MATTERS WORSE.

It should be noted that some remnants of paint can never be removed.  In some instances, dyes in the paint can penetrate the carpets dye sites and permanently etch and transform the carpets natural color to that of the paint.
