The warm acid state of urine offers a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, which will begin to flourish almost immediately upon deposit. In this original acid state, the urine begins to oxidize and react with the carpet or another textile to create a color change, which will become permanent if the urine is not treated immediately.

Some of this color change can be attributed to the strong ammonia that forms as urine passes through bacterial and chemical evolution. If left for days or weeks, depending on the fabric or floor type, urine salts and acids will change the dye structure, therefore causing permanent staining. Even if the soluble deposits are removed, the damage to the dye structure may already be done.

Enzymes are the best cleaning agent for urine, vomit, and feces. Enzymes are the only cleaning agent that digests harmful bacteria. For the best results use an enzyme spotter after you have rinsed the carpet, especially if the spot is not a fresh one.

WARNING:  Many over the counter pet odor and/or stain removers contain oxidizers and can cause color loss.  If your carpet is new, such color loss can void the warranty.

Products To Avoid

Try to stay away from products with high pH such as ammonia, Resolve, and oxygen bleaches. These products will leave the carpet with a residue and in a high pH state, which will enable the carpet to attract dirt like a magnet. How Tru Clean Surface Care Treats Urine and Odor In Carpeting

  • When presented with a urine issue, our technician will check the carpeting, mattress or upholstery with a Xenon light designed to cause organic matter to “fluoresce” or glow. The discovery of organic matter will allow us to determine how severe the problem is and the correct amount of enzymes to use to eliminate salts, biological matter, and off-gassing.
  • Once the urine deposits are located, the technician will treat these areas with a product designed to lift the salts and address any staining present.
  • We will then mix the appropriate amount of enzymes and flood the affected areas in sufficient quantity so that the enzymes will penetrate the carpet backing and underlying padding.
  • We will allow the enzymes sufficient dwell time, usually thirty minutes.
  • Upon completion of the dwell period, the technician will use a specialized tool to extract the enzymes, urine salts and bacteria from the carpeting and padding
  • We will then clean the carpeting as usual
  • The technician will then treat the carpeting once again with enzymes and use a fan to facilitate drying
  • Your carpeting will no longer off-gas and will be urine free

Please note:  Because bacteria is a living organism, and enzymes are designed to consume bacteria, the enzyme treatment will continue to work for a period of 7-14 days until its food source (bacteria) is no longer present.  Enzymes are harmless to pets and infants.
