Carpet Cleaning and Stain Removal – Do You Know The Difference?

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SPOT AND STAIN?

Many people call “spots” stains and “stains” spots.  Knowing the difference can determine if a “spot” or “stain” on your carpeting is permanent or not.

Spots are created by something being dropped or spilled on the carpet that for the most part, is organic in nature. The spill does not have the ability to permanently bond to the fiber or cause damage to the fiber. Proper cleaning steps can completely remove the substance from the carpet.

Examples of spots are organic substances like dust, dirt, mud and most foods that do not contain artificial food dyes, chewing gum, etc..

Stains are created by something being spilled on a carpet and the substance has the ability to permanently damage the carpet fiber. The substance permanently adds color or removes color from the carpet.  (Think bleach, some wines, Koolaid and some pet urine issues).

Examples of stains that add color to the carpet are things like foods with artificial or natural food dyes like soda, coffee, tea, wines, fruit punch, some juices, mustards, some chocolates, etc. Other strong chemicals like medicines, dyes, cosmetics, paints and stains, inks and toners or other things that have dyes, pigments or stains that can add color to the carpet fibers.

Our technicians are experienced in a wide range of stain remediation and in many cases can treat stains making them invisible.  The less the homeowner does themselves to “correct the stain” the better our chances are to correct them.

If you use the wrong cleaning chemicals to remove a spot the cleaner itself could create a stain. For example, sometimes homeowners will grab bleach, glass cleaner, metal cleaner, toilet bowl cleaners, and use them on the carpeting to remove a spot. All of these chemicals can remove the color from a carpet fiber.

There are also grocery store “spot and stain” removers that purport to remove stains.  Our suggestion would be to stay away from them as some contain optical brighteners that can damage carpet fibers and others contain ingredients that can permanently set a spot and turn it into a stain.
