Pet Urine and Odor Accidents on Carpeting
If you have pets at home, you know that accidents are bound to happen. Even the best trained pets can have accidents so here are some essential carpet stain and odor removal tips to keep in mind while cleaning up your furry friend’s mishap.
Find out Exactly Where it Happened
The first step to removing any odors or stain is to find the soiled area using your nose and eyes. A quick and easy way to spot any stains is by purchasing a black light, which can be found at any home supply store. These will usually reveal even old urine stains. It’s important to know exactly where the accident occurred so you don’t miss any spots.
Fresh surface stains
If the stain is new, meaning that it’s still wet, you should soak up as much of the urine as possible. Use a combination of newspaper and paper towels to do so. The more urine you can move, the easier that it will be to remove the stain as well as the odor.
When blotting the stain, place a thick layer of paper towels on top of the wet spot then cover these towels with a thick layer of newspaper. Once the papers are in place, stand on them for about a minute, then remove and repeat the same process until the area is as dry as you can get it. Once you have done this, flush the area thoroughly with a mixture of 50% WHITE vinegar and 50% cool water making sure the mixture has penetrated the carpeting AND padding.
Once the area has been saturated, let stand for about a minute and then remove as much of the moisture as possible through blotting or using a tool such as the wet vac. Don’t worry, the vinegar smell will dissipate within hours.
Stains that have already set in
For older pet stains the above treatment will not work and you will need the help of a professional. As pet urine ages, bacteria begins to set in and urine salts start to deteriorate the padding and carpet fibers. As this “rotting” process takes place, an odorous “off-gassing” occurs and while the homeowners may be unable to detect this odor visitors to the home can certainly smell it.
