Who knocked over the gravy boat during your big holiday dinner? It doesn’t much matter at this point. Here’s advice from Tru Clean on how to get dinner gravy stains out of your carpeting.

1. Use a spoon to remove as much gravy as you can. Scoop toward the center of the spill so you don’t accidentally spread the gravy stain.

2. Liberally sprinkle cornmeal or baking soda over the spot. After about 20 minutes, use a powerful vacuum to suck up the powder (which will have absorbed a lot of the gravy oils).

3. Moisten a sponge with rubbing alcohol and dab at the spot from the outside edge toward the center. Be sure that you don’t soak the sponge with the alcohol and that you clean it regularly.

4. Get a bucket and pour in two cups of very hot water, a tablespoon of white vinegar and a tablespoon of dish soap. Mix thoroughly and moisten a clean towel with the solution.

5. Use the cloth to blot up more of the spot, working from the outside edge toward the center. Repeat this process, cleaning the cloth as needed, until no more of the spot comes up. You can add a few extra drops of dish soap to the solution part way through to get rid of stubborn residue.

6. Get a clean towel and dampen it with water. Blot the area thoroughly to remove any soap in the carpet (soap left in a carpet actually attracts dirt).

At this point, most of the spot should be gone and you just need to let the carpet dry.
